Good software can really boost your eBay business!

Taking the decision to start selling on eBay is frankly not a hard one. It can make you money and is great fun too. But as your operation expands in size and sales you are likely to be confronted by a common problem: Organization.

Pretty soon you may find yourself with a huge headache on your hands. The common questions you will be asking yourself will be have you left feedback for all your customers? Was your shipping charge the right amount? What you need is some software to take care of all this for you and make it easier for you to organize yourself.

You can probably use Excel Spreadsheet to begin with, but once your operation has reached a certain size you really should treat yourself and your business to some dedicated eBay software.

Search for 'eBay selling software' in both MSN and Google. Once you have you search results focus on your priority and don't allow yourself to be sidetracked by fancy auction graphics and such like instead of the auction management software you need.

3 categories of software

Broadly speaking, there are 3 types of eBay selling software. Market insight software identifies what and how to sell. Auction management software administers your selling chores and listing enhancers which help you attract bids.

Market insight software help you decide what, when and how to sell. They do this by analyzing completed auctions and using the data gathered to generate statistics on enhancements, timing, sell-through rates and more. This category of software is particularly useful for those who are currently struggling to shift their inventories or who are planning to enter a new and unfamiliar category.

Auction management software on the other hand can make it easier for you to manage and administer your sales. They do this by placing frameworks around your sales and by automating repetitive tasks. As with all types of software these vary in their depth and breadth, but may include a number of features such as listing, payment, shipping and feedback management. This type of software can be quite useful for those who are selling well and wish to expand their operations a notch or two.

Finally, there are listing enhancers. These cover a wide range of products and often appeal to those who are selling well and have a well managed operation. They include features such as detailed statistics which can help in fine tuning your auctions, interactive video or images for showcasing high volume products and in some cases real-time chat to provide instant customer service. These will be particularly useful if you are selling expensive products and are seeking a greater level of customer service to give you an edge over your competitors.

Once you have decided as to which type of software best meets your current needs, you should list in detail your exact requirements. Decide how much you are willing to spend and which features are absolutely essential to you. Also give some thought to which features would be preferable if not essential. The ability to support international eBay sites for instance.

Hosted services

As well as software there are also hosted services that offer similar features to eBay software. The difference between software and hosted services is that while software is downloaded and saved onto your hard drive and can be used offline, hosted products can be accessed only through a live connection. Your details including your auction stats and info are stored on the vendor's computers as suppose to your own. New features or improvements to these services are carried out by the vendor without you having to do anything.

Choosing which of these two approaches you adopt for your needs is largely a matter of choice. But it can depend on factors such as internet speed. For those with a slow connection software may be more advisable.

In choosing, bare in mind that there may not be a single product out there that meets all your needs, so choose carefully. But provided you are happy with what you get you may have found the key to your success and peace of mind.
